Co-Music Director/Teaching Artist, Urban Improv, 2021-2022 School Year


This position requires passion for creative youth development, and extensive practice in music performance, social-emotional learning skills, trauma-informed and culturally responsive community engagement. An Urban Improv Teaching Artist will have experience in performances for youth audiences, working with disinvested communities, and a desire to engage students through applied theatre and multimedia content and platforms. Applicants should reflect the student body served, who are from predominantly Black, Brown and Global Majority communities and the spectrum of gender identities.

Position status: Part-time, non-exempt (.294 FTE)

Salary: Starting - $24,000/yr

(additional income from commissioned work and assembly performances available).

Schedule: ~17 hrs week for 36 weeks, September 7 2021 through June 9, 2022

Tues-Fri, generally between the hours of 9am-2:30pm

Location: Greater Boston area


● Serve as Co-Music Director, Performer, Facilitator, and Creative Collaborator for partner schools,

community-based organizations, and community events.

● Record video content of ensemble scene work for school/partner access to assist with program delivery.

● Serve as a community ambassador, representing RFL to support the organization's goals.

● Lead and co-lead live, face-to-face classroom visits (Covid-19 safety protocols and social distancing practiced; virtual programming only when mandated by BPS, partner organization, or update by CDC)

● Collaborate with resident music composer on music direction, music arrangement and supplemental composition, and recording for additional compensation.

● Attend weekly all-staff meetings and participate in professional development.

● Attend/participate in development/community events.


● Demonstrated commitment to anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

● 3+ years of service as a teaching artist in a school /youth organization setting.

● 3+ years performing in an ensemble and/or experience with improv.

● Skilled in vocal music and/or spoken word performance.

● Strong alignment with the Rehearsal for Life mission, vision, and values.

● Experience engaging audiences in social media platforms.

● Willingness to engage in applied theatre, devising, and performance.

● Ability to influence and motivate others, with a keen understanding of how to impact individual and group mindset, knowledge and skills.

● Proficiency or fluency in a second language is desirable, but not required.
