Brooklyn Children’s Theatre brings together children from diverse backgrounds to learn and grow through the collaborative art of musical theatre.

 

Over the past 15 years, BCT has expanded to provide theatre classes in Gowanus and Greenpoint as well as school-based programs in three locations in Kensington, Brooklyn. BCT has a large scholarship program, allowing children to participate regardless of their financial background. 62% of BCT’s students receive financial assistance of some kind.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Brooklyn Children’s Theatre is seeking a creative and organized arts administrator who wants to join a team of arts professionals dedicated to our mission.

 

The Program Administrator will report directly to the Executive Director and the Artistic Director. They will participate in managing 2-3 of BCT’s educational musical theatre programs with children in grades 1-8. They will supervise teaching artists at these programs and oversee the smooth operation of those programs. (More specific duties are listed below.). In addition, the program administrator will oversee house management and box office for our performances and perform various Human Resources functions.

BCT is a small organization serving 1000 children in grades 1-12 every year. The ideal candidate will have a non-profit and theatre background, experience working in a busy creative office environment where multi-tasking, flexibility and prioritizing are required, and the desire to learn and collaborate. 

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

·       Program Management: Manage teaching artists, staff, volunteers and interns working in BCT programs, including:

o   supervising and giving feedback to teaching artists;

o   communicating with school administrators, other site supervisors and community partners about logistics of classes and performances;

o   communicating with parents and staff, when applicable;

o   preparing class materials, working with the graphic designer on creating flyers, playbills and other materials;

o   communicating with costume designers, transporting props, sets and costumes and handling all logistics leading up to final performances. 

 

·      Human Resources: Track employees’ time sheets for sick days, vacation days, paid family leave, etc. Manage legal issues, including insurance policies, workers’ comp, disability, unemployment insurance, background checks, etc.

 

·      House Management: Manage box office for BCT performances, including managing comp list and ticket sales, tallying attendance and managing money and sales at performances. Transport set and costume pieces from BCT’s Rehearsal Studios to the performance venues and back.

   

·      Marketing/I.T.: Create and send email blasts promoting upcoming classes and performances. Research and submit advertising to local, parent based, periodicals. Update website to reflect current programming. Trouble shoot website glitches. Help employees with company email set up.

   

WHEN AND WHERE:

o        BCT’s Rehearsal Studios, 540 President Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215

o        Monday-Friday, 10am-6pm (Must be willing to be flexible and swap out   

            some of these hours on show weekends.)

o        Employment would be scheduled to start on Monday, August 19, 2019

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must have 3 years non-profit arts experience.

Completion of 4-year college preferred, or 5 years equivalent experience.

Must be computer literate and have experience with Word Press.

Must have a car, a driver’s license, and be able to drive.

Must be able to lift 25 lbs and walk up 6 flights of stairs.

 

SKILLS:

Must be organized, good at solving problems, with attention to detail, patient, and able to deal with a wide range of personalities with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Must respond to emails, texts, phone calls, and other forms of communication within 24 hours.

Experience as a teaching artist a major plus.  Education and/or experience as a theatre professional a major plus. Experience with NYC public schools a plus.

Must have excellent customer service skills.

Must have strong people management skills and ability to be flexible when situations are changeable and/or challenging. 

Must enjoy working with children.

Self-motivated, proactive person with ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Commitment to multi-year relationship with BCT

 

Compensation: $50,000/year plus health insurance (80% covered by BCT).
